국민일보는 “한국기독교총연합회(한기총)의 WCC반대집회 참여가 확인될 경우 심각한 결과를 초래할 수 있다”고 토마스 슈마허 세계복음주의연맹(WEA) 신학위원장이 발언했다고 보도를한 바 있다. "법과 교회"는 직접 슈마허와 인터뷰 했다.  그의 얘기를 들어보자.
 
I can say a lot about the accusations at the WCC, the topics, syncretism, communism, homosexuality. I can at the moment see nothing about CCK or the demonstration because we're still gathering the information on what is going on, the general secretary is getting all the information.
 
나는 WCC가  혼합주의, 공산주의, 동성애인정, 다른 주제로 인해 비난받는 것에 대해 말할 수 있다.  그리고 한기총이나 반대주의자들의 시위에 대해서는 현재 무슨 일이 발생하고 있는지에 대해 정보를 수집하는 상황에 있기 때문에 어떤 것도 말할 수 없다.  
 
He then would react? to it. What I can say in principle is when we come to our general assembly it is to further the unity of Christians. We want more unity of Christians, and more unity of evangelicals, not less. We did not come here to get fights going, but the opposite.
 
그가 반응했는가? 원칙적으로 내가 말할 수 있는 것은 우리가 WCC 총회에 온 것은 기독교인들간의 일치를 강화시키기 위해서이다. 우리는 기독교인들의 일치, 복음주의자들의 일치를 더욱 원한다. 우리는 여기에 싸우거나 반대하기 위해서 온 것이 아니다.   

Now let's start with the question. WEA cooperates with WCC where? the differences when it comes to syncretism. WCC, 30, 40 years ago, openly endorsed religous acts of other religions. That's no question and we oppose to it. But WCC has very much changed there. If you look at this general assembly, there is no non-Christian religious leader among the plenary speakers.
 
WEA가 WCC와 협력하는가? 다른 점은 혼합주의이다. 30, 40년전에 WCC는 타종교의 종교적 행위를 공개적으로 시인했다. 그것은 어떤 문제가 없었다. 그러나 우리는 거기에 반대한다. 그러나 WCC는 많은 변화가 있었다. 만약 당신이 총회에 참석한다면 타종교의 리더가 말하는 것을 볼 수가 없을 것이다.        
 
When you think that in Canbera 1989, Korean Buddist lady opened the ceremony of WCC. It was a Buddist ceremony, that today would be unthinkable, even with the WCC. WCC still has a broad spectrum, there are still people who have.
 
1989년 캔버라에서 한국불교신자(정현경을 의미)가 WCC의 의식(초혼제)을 거행한 적이 있다. 오늘날은 WCC에서조차 생각할 수 없는 것이었다. WCC는 여전히 넓은 스펙트럼을 갖고있다.   
 
I mean, people who have different positions when it comes to the other world religions, but in the whole, we signed the document on Christian witness in multi-religious world together with WCC, and there it says you only can get into dialogues with other religions if you first have  strengthened your Christian faith and you're willing to witness to the others about Christian faith.  We signed this in 2011. 
 
다양한 종교상황에서는 다른 위치가 있지만 대체로 우리는 WCC와 함께 다종교상황에서 그리스도증거에 대한  서명을 했다. 그 서명은 기독교의 신앙을 강화시키고 그리스도의 신앙을 증거할 때, 타종교화 대화할 수 있는 내용이 들어있다. 우리는 2011년에 서명을 했다.  
 
With this, for us , the topic of syncretism of WCC is over. It has been there, but I would not agree that WCC still is involved with syncretism.  If you look at the general assembly of WCC, nowhere will you find religious cermonies of other religions or mix. You will have no plenary where Chrisian, muslim, and hindu will pray or something. That changed.
 
이런 것으로 볼 때, WCC의 혼합주의는 이미 끝났다. 혼합주의는 있었지만 나는 WCC가 혼합주의에 연루되었다고 생각하지 않는다. 만일 당신이 WCC 총회에 참석한다면 어디에서도 종교적 혼합주의의 의식을 볼 수 없을 것이다. 

 Communist (공산주의).
 
It is no question that until 1990, WCC was very close to Soviet Union as was WEA very close to USA. I'm not only speaking about the churches, but the governments. 
 
1990년까지 WEA가 미국과 가까웠고 WCC는 소련과 가까웠다는 것은 의심의 여지가 없다. 그것은 교회나 국가도 마찬가지이다.  
 
We were involved in the cold war. But already in 1991, the general secretary of wcc, Konrad Raiser at the time(찾아보니 이사람은 1993 부터인데요?), apologized and he also apologized to evangelicals, the pastors that had come out of the communist world. WCC said that was all lie, that never happened. But he apologized that they did not believe them. Since then, the communist influence has been diminishing in WCC, and now with all kinds of political opinions. So the only thing you could discuss is why does WCC not speak about N Korea as clearly as does WEA. 
 
우리는 냉전시대에 있었다. 그러나 1991년(실제는 1993년) WCC의 서기인 Konald Raiser는  공산주의 밖에 있는 목사들과 복음주의자들에게 사과를 했다. 그러나 WCC는 그것이 모두 거짓말이었고, 그러한 일이 발생하지 않았다고 말했다. 그는 그들이 그것을 믿지 않았다고 했다. 그 이후로 WCC내에 공산주의의 영향은 약화되었고, 모든 종류의 정치적 입장도 약회돠었다.  논의할만한 주제는, 왜 WCC는 WEA처럼 북한에 대해 명확하게 말하지 않는가?
 
What I know is no leader of WCC has any sympathy for N Korea. So nobody is... I'm in ~~~ committee and there's a huge debate going on the Korea statement.
 
내가 아는 것은, WCC의 리더들은 북한에 대한 동정심이 없다. 나는 회의에 참석했고 거기에는 한국상황에 대한 많은 논의가 있었다. 
 
We'll have a statement on the reunification of Korea and goes back and forth to what to say. Even there, there's not one person who is in favor of N Korean government. It's a debate whether you should say this loudly or you should do quiet diplomacy. But it's no doubt that NKorea is in dictatorship and that Christians have no religious freedom in the country, that no human rights in the country, and this has to be totally changed.
 
우리는 한반도의 통일에 대한 문서를 갖고있고, 앞으로도 계속 논의할 것이다. 북한에 대해서 호의적으로 생각하는 사람은 없다. 크게 말하든 약하게 말하든 외교적인 주제이다. 그러나 의심할 여지가 없는 것은 북한이 독재정권이고 종교의 자유가 없고, 인권이 유린되고 있다. 이러한 것들은 변해야 한다. 
 
질문 Now homosexuality (동성애자) 
 
WCC as such, have no position on homosexuality. There's no statement on homosexuality. When you look at the member churches, I would say half of the churches oppose to homosexuality.
 
WCC는 동성애에 대한 어떤 입장도 갖고있지 않다. 동성애자에 대한 어떤 문서도 없다. 당신이 WCC회원이라면 대다수의 교회가 동성애자에 대해서 반대하는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다.
 
Why? Becuase you have all the orthodox member churches, member churches, African churches, they all oppose to homosexuality.
 
정교회 회원이나 아프리카 교회들조차도 동성애자에 대해서는 반대할 것이다.
 
So if WCC would vote on the topic, the majority would vote against homosexuality. Now WCC has member churches that accept the ordination of homosexuals to be baptized pastors, like the Anglican churches in USA. Those churches could not become members of WEA.
 
만일 WCC가 동성애문제로인해 투표를 한다면 대다수는 반대표를 던질 것이다. 현재 WCC는 미국에 있는 성공회교회처럼 동성애 사제를 안수하는 교회를 회원으로 하고있다. 그러나 그러한 교회들은 WEA의 회원이 될 수 없다.   

They are, and can become members of WCC.  So this is the only thing that is true about it, is that WCC has no policy on homosexuality and accepts churches where homosexuals can be ordained. But that doesn't mean that they are in favor of it; the majority of churches are all opposed to it.  There's difference in WEA, we wouldn't and couldn't accept the church which has ordained homosexuals. But that doesn't mean that WCC speaks on behalf of homosexuality. It has no opinion on it.
 
WCC는 동성애안수를 하는 교단을 회원으로 받아들이지만 동성애에 대한 어떤 정책도 없다. 그러나 많은 회원교단교회들이 동성애를 반대하고 있다.
 
WCC and WEA 차이점?
 
We would not accept the church, the Anglican church of America, the Episcopal churches of America, could not become a member of WEA because they accept homosexual pastors as ~, and they even have homosexual bishop. We would not accept them. They are a member of  WCC. So this is the difference. But again, this does not mean that WCC endorses homosexuality. We know that more than half of the member churches in WCC are totally opposed to ordaining homosexuals to be pastors at least or homosexuality overall. The Russian orthodox church, for example, it's by far the largest member church of WCC, has a very clear stand on this. So the difference is whether a church that accepts homosexuality can become a member. WCC they can become a member, WEA they cannot become a member.
 
우리는 미국의 동성애자가 속한 교회를 WEA 회원으로 받아들일 수 없다. 그들은 동성애자 목사도 있고 사제도 있다. 그들은 단지 WCC의 회원이다. 그렇다고 WCC는 동성애를 지지하는 것이 아니다. 동성애 성직자, 목사가 안수 받는 것을 절반 이상이 완전히 반대하고 있다. 예를들어, 정교 교회가 가장 큰 교회 회원이며 이에 관한 (반대)주장은 매우 강하다. WCC는 동성애는 인정하지만 WEA는 그러한 교단은 회원이 될 수 없다.

Many conservative Korean Christians think wcc welcomes homosexual priests communism…?

WCC는 복음주의 기독교 멤버가 127 국가에 구성돼있다. 국가마다 의견이 다르며 국가가 결정하기에 나름이다. 국가연합을 위해서라도 의견을 존중한다.
 
What do you think about evangelical christians protests wcc and they had a demonstration agains wcc?
 
나는 시위하는 사람과 얘기해본적이 없다.  내가 할 수 있는 말은, WEA는 166년 동안 시위를 지지한 적이 없다. 나는 영국에서 왔는데, 시위의 존재에 대해서도 몰랐다. 이것은 분명 한국적인 행위이다.
 
WEA, what do you think about homosexual, communism, plurism--?
 
공산주의에 관해서는, 1969년도에 러시아 정교가 멤버가 됐을 때 특정한 견해가 있었다.
사회주의 국가에 관해서는, 공산주의 통치로 박해받은 소수여서 우리는 서로를 보호하는 입장이였다.
 
동성애에 관해서는 127 회원교회 모두 이 같은 행위를 받아들이지 않았다. 기독교 교회에 새로운 현상이다. 전세계 북미와 서유럽에서  1.5 % 정도가 자기자신을 동성애로 인정하고있다. 숫자는 매우 작다.
 
기독교 교회는 동성애를 부정하는 것이 아니라 동성애자들이 하는 행위를 부정한다. 우리는 성적 취향을 받아들인다. 동성에게 감정이 있는 사람들, 로마 카톨릭이 자기 민족을 인정했듯이 우리도 그들을 인간으로 그리고 예수님 안에 형제 자매로 인정한다.
 
종교다원주의는 항상 교회 내에 있었다. WCC 는 현재보다 더 종교다원적이었다. 지금은 기독교적 향이 훨씬 강하며 1948년에 시간되었던 종교다원주의가 60-70년대에 비해 다시 뿌리로 돌아갔다.
 
I think you are an a conservative Christian belonging to a pentacoastal denomination, do you think wcc accepts homo seuqality?
 
그것은 완전히 그들의 결정이다. 나는 신학에 관해서 보수주의적이다. 나는 성경이 하나님의 진리 안에서 일하고 있다고 믿고 사도적 계승을 믿는다.
 
하지만 실행에 옮길 때는 나는 자유주의적이다. 왜냐하면 신학적으로 보수주의적인 기독교인들은 세상에 살아갈 떄 현대사회에 복음을 전파해야하므로 젊은이들에게도 기독교 믿음이 정확히 무엇인지 전할 수가 있다. 이것은 유럽에 개혁자들이16, 17세기에 일어났던 종교개혁과 비슷하다. 그들이 교회를 개혁하고 사도가 가르친 뿌리로 돌아가기를 원했다.
